About Z.E.D.

Z.E.D. (Zombie Emergency Defense) is an organization created to ensure the preservation of the human race against an inevitable zombie apocalypse. We don't ask "if," "maybe," or "possibly." Instead we ask "how," "when," and "for how long?" We train, prepare, and remain eternally vigilant in order to create a world where our children can play in the front yard without fear.

Knowledge is our greatest weapon against the zombie infestation. We understand the importance of having a plan and being able to execute it at any given moment. If you care about your own life, family, and the earth's population we urge you to join Z.E.D.

Origins

Z.E.D was founded in 2006 by Aaron Haaland of 'A Comic Shop' as a way to inform the community of the zombie threat that he had witnessed firsthand. In 2007, Aaron was introduced to former event promoter and zombie survivor Nick "Jade" Martinolich and a lasting friendship was formed. Sharing their stories of zombie encounters helped both individuals come to a better understanding of the fear and helplessness they'd been living with every day.

With each other's support, and 'A Comic Shop' as a base of operations, Aaron and Nick were able to build a network of like-minded individuals who share their ultimate goal of survival. In these trying times, we are daily bombarded with threats: not only by zombies but by financial instability, terrorism, and natural disasters. Aaron and Nick's goal with Z.E.D. is to prepare individuals to defend the population against zombies, and to be aware of the world around them and their place in it.

Events

In an attempt to inform and prepare the community, we host several events open to the public so that each individual can become responsible for his or her own survival.

Tactical Training (Zombie Hunts)

It is our hope that every citizen will be able to handle the pressures of surviving in a world overrun by zombies. With our zombie hunts we have designed zombie apocalypse-specific missions that help participants keep a cool head while trying to collect supplies, clear buildings, and locate survivors. While participants attempt these tasks they are bombarded by a constant stream of zombies that must be fended off. We produce our zombie hunts by utilizing a 12,000+ sq. ft. indoor combat arena and military inspired laser based weapons system (courtesy of Hard Knocks Gaming Center), professional zombie actors, and film-influenced lighting and atmosphere enhancers.

Live Fire Training

It is always ideal to keep as much space between you and a zombie as possible. While it may be necessary at times to use close quarters combat, the preferred method of zombie eradication is firearms. Several times a year, Z.E.D. partners with East Orange Shooting Sports to provide the community with the chance to practice their marksmanship with pistols and other side arms. Our commitment to survival has even led us to create custom zombie themed targets and a gun safety presentation that not only incorporates responsible firearms handling but responsible zombie handling as well.

Zombie Dance

We understand that to find a successful balance in life one must sometimes mix business with pleasure. Our annual zombie dance, held at BackBooth in downtown Orlando, provides both as it brings our members together in a centralized location with others who may be interested in or previously unaware of our cause. Our dances are an important community outreach that attracts possible zombie sympathizers, so that we may educate them about the truth regarding zombies and hopefully create new allies in our mission of preservation.

Monthly Meetings

Each month Z.E.D hosts a meeting held at A Comic Shop in Winter Park where captain Nick "Jade" Martinolich addresses various Z.E.D. related issues such as survival techniques, training regimen, and outreach opportunities. To assist in our education we utilize Max Brooks' phenomenal New York Times best seller The Zombie Survival Guide. At each meeting we go through various sections of this text and discuss how we can apply it to our own mission here in Orlando. Members and the community are invited to join us and voice their opinions and concerns about Z.E.D., zombies, and survival.

Membership

Z.E.D. will begin a new membership in January 2009. New members will receive official Z.E.D. armbands and membership cards as well as priority sign-up for events, members-only training, access to an online database for sharing ideas, and more.
